I cannot entertain fo unworthy a Thought of this Houl'e, rhat'any Gentleman in it, would at this time in direet Terms be for perpetuating themfelves yet if they confent to this Bill, I {hall reckon they are 'doing it; for tho' it only prolongs this Parliament for Seven Years, 1 cannot doubt, but hereafter there will be another for continuing it longer; becaufe before the end of this Term, the Reafons will probably be {tronger for it, than they are now: Neither can! Imagine, that Gentlemen Eire afraid to trufl the Peoples Choice again; do they think that the great and memorable Things this Parlia ment has done for the Service and Benefit of their Country, will make them lefs ac ceptable to the People No onewill fay fo, and then I fee no Reafon why they lhould be for making this Alteration in our Laws and Conllirution, which will CC} taialy have a very ill Efi'eet Upon the Minds of the people: For theywill be ready to fay, and with Reafon, that after the expiration of the Three Years, you are no longer their Reprefenra tiyes, becaufe they chofe you to ferve them no longer. With great Submiflion l lpeak it, in my poor Opinion, K L - s and C_ - s, can no more continue 3 Parliament beyond its na tural Duration, than they can make a Parliament. 1 know at extraordinary lunfruies, Conventions have been turned into parliaments, but it has been thought adrifeable foon to determine them, and to pais Aets in the fuhfequent Legal Parliaments, to confirm what they have done. And I make no doubt, but if this Bill pallets into a Law, and this Pai liament is continued more than Three Years, there will be an Ad in the fuceeeding Parliament to confirm whatever (hall be done after the Three Years. Their: is an [nfiance in ybur Statute Book, where all th'e'ae'ts ofa Parliament were declared void and re ea becaufe the Parliament was unlawfully fummoned, and the Members not duly cliolgn.
