Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Sermons by the Late Evert Van Der Hart of Rochester, N. Y: With Introductory Sketch of the Author

Early in life, there were already unmistakable evidences of pious attachment to the Saviour and his cause. In this the Lord showed to his pious and praying parents, that He was faithful to his Covenant promises, and that their prayers were answered. Nor did the observing and interested eye of his beloved pastor the Reverend P. J. Oggel, afterwards Professor at Hope College - fail to notice in young Van der Hart such traits of character and such evidence of mental power, as gave promise of useful ness, if only a suitable education could be had. His parents were unable to bear the burden of expense connected with a high er training. Other ways and means were now devised to secure the needed education. By the efforts and at the advice of the pastor, the younger portion of the Church, already named, the means were pledged. The Church did not fail to make its promise good.

After some preparatory studies at Pella, he was sent to Hope College, Holland, Mich., - from which he graduated in 1869.
