Un'hl the outbreak of the war Serbia was perhaps to most Englishmen little more than a name, and not a very acceptable name. For it was the worst pages of her history which chie?y clung to people's memory. It is not surprising, therefore, that, when Europe was suddenly threatened with a great conflagration of which Serbia was supposed to be the cause, Englishmen were inclined to visit upon her their horror and indignation. Gradually, as proofs accumulated that, whatever the demerits of Serbia, she had been used on this occasion merely as a stalking-horse for vast ambitions bent on war, a reaction set in and grew with every fresh report of her splendid gallantry in the field. It is preposed in these pages to tell as brie?v as possible the story of Serbia and of the part her people have played throughout the course of events that have been leading up for many years past to the present catastrophe - a part that has been neither unimportant nor discreditable.
