Publisher's Synopsis
This book represents the synthesis of a programme of research into community service by offenders in Scotland conducted between 1986 and 1991. It examines the effectiveness of practice in community service schemes; offendersÆ experiences of and attitudes towards community service; the experiences and views of the recipients of work; the sue of community service in relation to other sentences; the comparative costs of community service and custody; and offendersÆ experiences of community service and subsequent reconviction. The broad conclusion reached is that community service schemes have, to a large extent, been successful in achieving a range of policy objectives. The implications are discussed in the context of wider legislative and policy changes in Scotland and in England and Wales.
