The decision on the status of Puerto Rico is obviously fraught with consequences for the Caribbean and for the foreign relations of the United States. A decision for independence would of course lead to the creation of a new state in the Caribbean, with the larg est economy and the fourth largest population In the region.
A decision for statehood would make the United States truly a Caribbean nation, fundamentally affecting our relations with the region, indeed with the hemisphere.
