Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Selections From the World's Devotional Classics, Vol. 1 of 10: Tobit to Chrysostom

This series of ten volumes is a response to demands indicated by religious developments during recent years. These developments seemed to suggest as timely a gamen and selection from Christian sources of devotional utterances suitable for private and public use. Revolt and protest against a materialistic trend in practical life has been shown by re vived interest in mysticism, in that life that is seated in the inmost recesses of the spirit. Recurrent revivals are symptomatic of a sense of deep need, expression of which calls for guidance. Many devout Christians have felt increasingly the limitations of inelastic litur gies, and have desired a larger range of avail able sources, consecrated by essential worth, for expression of aspiration, praise, and peti tion. On the other hand, the infelicities often attending non-liturgical worship suggest the advantage of help and guidance in the expres sion and form of worship. Nineteen centuriespater.
