A study of the develop ment Of this movement shows that the chief promoters are not among the teachers, but among those interested in agricultural and those interested in social questions. The former are trying to make the school serve more practical ends in rural communities, while the latter wish to reach a class of children in the Cities not interested in the regular school work. Development of the school-garden idea has been effected mainly through efforts in these two directions. Both have made substantial contributions to education, as evinced, on the one hand, by the tendency to make the garden part Of the school equipment, and, on the other, by the results actually Obtained in large cities.
