Karl Eugen était un souverain magnifique et autori taire. Il prétendait faire le bonheur de ses sujets, mais entendait bien ne procéder qu'à sa guise, sans prendre l'avis des intéressés. Il se croyait de grands dons de pédagogue; il surveillait en personne son école, pépi nière de futurs officiers ou de futurs fonctionnaires; il accueillait avec délices les louanges de commande que lui décernaient ses protégés. Schiller a dû, comme bien d'autres, lui adresser des discours ou des épîtres adulatoires. Mais les sept années qu'il a passées dans cet internat, d'organisation et de discipline toutes mi litaires, ne lui ont laissé que d'assez pénibles soave nirs. C'est là, sans doute, qu'il a reçu toute sa formation philosophique et littéraire, et il a eu la chance d'y connaître quelques maîtres excellents. Mais il a tou jours eu le sentiment qu'une tyrannique autorité bri dait son libre génie. Il voulait ètre poète; or le duc était décidé à faire de lui un fonctionnaire. Pour échapper du moins à la carrière des armes, Schiller résolut, à seize ans, de se vouer àla médecine. Cinq ans plus tard, à vingt et un ans, il quittait l'académie militaire pour devenir médecin d'un des régiments qui tenaient garnison à Stuttgart; le duc ne lui avait d'ail leurs pas accordé rang d'officier.
