Die Oper erzählt die Geschichte von der jungen Sarema, die zwischen Liebe und Pflicht hin- und hergerissen ist. Es ist ein einzigartiges Beispiel der österreichischen Romantik und spiegelt die Zeiten der Entstehung wider.
