Eleven-year-old Sanja had only been a vampire for five weeks but it had been a miserable five weeks. For one thing, unlike most vampires, Sanja remembered her life before the change. The East Indian girl remembered all too vividly the night a savage vampire had attacked them in the parking lot of a London market. The creature had killed Sanja's mother first, snapping the woman's neck in an effort to get to the blood there. Another family had been slaughtered, too. Finally, sated by its first kills, the vampire had only drunk from its last two victims-one of which had been Sanja. Although she was now one of them, Sanja hated the vampires for what they had done to her mother. And for what they had made Sanja into. Not to mention that vampires were cruel, even to their own kind. Because Sanja had not been claimed by any of the great vampire Houses, she had no protection or sponsor. That meant she was disposable. If she wound up dead, or worse, who was to care? Taken from England and relocated to America at the command of some mysterious vampire council, it was only through a chance encounter that Sanja went from an unwanted, eleven-year-old plaything for stronger vampires to something much more powerful-something that threatened the stability of even the long-standing vampire Houses.
