The scene of the surveys - The county of Orange was chosen prima rily because of its average character. It is near the center of the State, moderate in size, with fairly good roads, having a strictly American population, about evenly divided as to whites and negroes. It is almost wholly rural, with but few very rich or very poor people in all its boundary. It is traversed by two main. Trunk lines of rail way - the Chesapeake Ohio and the Southern. From the county seat, Orange, there is also a narrow-gauge railroad, the Piedmont, Fredericksburg Potomac, running due east to Fredericksburg, 36 miles away.
