Publisher's Synopsis
On July 19, 1979, the Nicaraguan people threw out the hated Somoza dictatorship and ended nearly fifty years of U.S.-imposed tyranny. Under the leadership of the Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN), workers and peasants began to rebuild their country and to chart a new course, one based on meeting the needs and aspirations of the overwhelming majority. In this collection, leaders of the FSLN tell the story of Nicaragua's fight for genuine national independence. They explain how the revolution occurred, what changes it brought about, and how they organized to defend it. From these speeches, interviews, and articles emerges a picture of Nicaragua's revolution and the working people who made it. Carlos Fonseca, one of the founders of the FSLN, was its central leader until he was murdered by the Somoza dictatorship in 1976. Tomás Borge, Daniel Ortega, Humberto Ortega, and Jaime Wheelock were members of the FSLN's National Directorate and played major roles in the Government of National Reconstruction.
