San Gennaro è qualcosa di più del patrono di Napoli: è il carattere della fede napoletana, è un po' l'anima della città, è il santo che si può vantare in paradiso di godere la maggior popolarità. In questo suo libro del 1909 Matilde Serao, in poco più di 200 pagine, ne racconta la storia, la leggenda, le sfumature come da par suo: dagli aneddoti più curiosi (sapevate che esiste un'altra ampolla del santo fuori dall'Italia) ai luoghi della fede, dai momenti storici segnati dalla speranza popolare che il santo "Guappone" potesse fare qualcosa per Napulè (dalla peste, alle guerre, alle eruzioni del Vesuvio), alle dispute sul corpo del santo con la città di Benevento. San Gennaro fu infatti vescovo di Benevento e la città ne vanta i natali insieme a Napoli. Ma c'è di più, Benevento rapì il corpo del santo e se lo tenne per più di 300 anni. E lo sapevate che per un breve periodo i napoletani si offesero col santo, poiché il suo sangue si era liquefatto davanti a un generale francese "giacobino" (ateo) e per questo motivo, per pochi anni, gli preferirono Sant'Antonio? Nel libro troverete anche tutti i luoghi di Napoli e dintorni dedicati al santo e dove sono custodite, vere o presunte, reliquie. Ci sono poi le note autobiografiche, molto interessanti, di Matilde Serao, che verso la fine del volume ci racconta delle esperienze vissute in prima persona, durante le eruzioni del Vesuvio del 1872 e del 1906. Nel 1872 l'allora sedicenne Serao, che aveva già sviluppato la sua proverbiale risata, che l'avrebbe sempre caratterizzata, frequentava la scuola e veniva ripresa dagli insegnanti, che pronosticavano che non avrebbe fatto nulla nella vita. La madre della Serao, greca di fede "scismatica", si accompagnò insieme alla figlia nelle preghiere al santo e la rassicurava come solo una madre sa fare. Nel 1906 invece la Serao cinquantenne fu spettatrice ancora una di una città ricoperta di cenere, dove si faceva fatica a respirare e aumentava la paura, e di 200 mila napoletani che andarono a bussare alla porta dall'arcivescovo a chiedere di "fare uscire il santo" per placare il Vesuvio.La scrittrice fa un augurio ai lettori, quello di possedere un "cuore semplice e primitivo", non ragionare secondo "i gelidi rigori della logica" né elaborare "analisi implacabili dei fatti", perché, solo quando si ha "una fede infantile, una fede primitiva, che nulla discute, che tutto accetta, che tutto crede", si può finalmente comprendere "la leggenda di San Gennaro", così come "è passata di bocca in bocca, di persona in persona, da diciassette secoli".
