Publisher's Synopsis

It is always a complex task to condense in one volume - even when lavishly illustrated, a land as full of treasures as San Casciano. Rich in history and tradition, architectural and environmental beauty, stratified cultures that have produced over the centuries a community able to conserve, to transmit and update its values with the changing times, to embrace famous personages as well as the ordinary men and women whose work has moulded our landscape while protecting its natural beauty.

The efforts of our community, and of the municipal Administration in particular, have focused on keeping alive the memory of those who have, in various manner and in different capacities, conferred glory on our town, as amply described in these pages: from Niccolò Machiavelli to Antonio Morrocchesi, from Giuseppe Sarchiani to Francesco Lucardesi. Similar attention is devoted to conserving and enhancing the parishes, churches and castles abounding in the land around San Casciano; and to the works, some of them displayed in our municipal museum, of world-famous artists - from Ambrogio Lorenzetti to Coppo di Marcovaldo and Simone Martini - as well as the priceless archaeological finds unearthed in our territory.
