This is the alternate version of It Was Always Our Destiny, the original story of Alex and Claudia. While it isn't imperative to read IWAOD before reading its alternate version, it is a great read, so I encourage you to... at some point.
What if they never lost those five years. What if they waded through the messiness. What if they unearthed their destiny sooner? What if they discovered who and what they are to one another before she went out west... before he lost her entirely. What if no one adversely influenced their earlier rapport? What if the only thing standing between the two of them and their destiny is them? Can they get out of their way? Can they accept who and what they are to each other in this reality, or will the complications prove to be too heavy and vast? Will this version of their lives work?
