Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Saint Paul and the Northern Pacific Railway: Grand Opening, September 1883

With the coming of the second stage of development, when the post had grown into a town, it was just as naturally the source of supply and the most available point from which communication could be kept up with the cities of the West, then growinginto prominence, and with the larger seats of commerce in the East. The old line of carts, which once came down from the Red River valley by the route now traversed by the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba railroad, was the precursor of the great commercial arteries which were one day to pour their wealth into the heart of St. Paul, thence to be borne to the world's markets; while the return supplies carried back to the pioneers in the wilderness, were the first fruits of the wholesale trade 'which new taxes both enterprise and capital to satisfy its requirements.
