Publisher's Synopsis

Rustic Chivalry, also known as Cavalleria Rusticana, is a melodrama in one act written by the Italian composer Pietro Mascagni in 1891. The story is set in a small Sicilian village during the Easter season and follows the tragic love affair between Turiddu, a young man who has returned from military service, and his former lover Lola, who is now married to the wealthy Alfio. Turiddu seeks revenge by seducing Alfio's wife, which leads to a violent confrontation and ultimately, his death. The opera is known for its passionate music and realistic portrayal of rural life in Italy. It premiered in Rome in 1890 and quickly became a popular sensation, launching Mascagni's career as a composer. Rustic Chivalry is considered one of the most important works in the verismo opera genre, which focused on depicting ordinary people and their struggles. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
