On his return to this country, the father settled in Palmira Square, Brighton, and it was there that the son of his early years spent the most time. He was educated by the Rev. John Hogg of Brixham, Devonshire, where, in the company of three or four children of the same age, he studied until he went to university. In 1846 he enrolled at Trinity College Cambridge and graduated from BA in 1850. It was during this period that a great misfortune happened to him.His father had become possessed with the idea that he was the legitimate heir to the Ralston estate in Ayrshire, and, to establish his claim, he initiated a litigation process in prosecution that dissipated his entire fortune.
