Publisher's Synopsis

Rorke's Drift was a highly influential art school which in the 1960s and 1970s provided the only place where black artists in South Africa could acquire a formal training. Despite its importance as a key site for black printmakers, little has been written on the subject. This study, illustrated with some 50 colour and 120 black and white prints and contemporary photographs, looks at the history of the school, which was established by the Swedish Lutheran Church and employed Swedish teachers, investigates the individual teachers and artists, and examines the prints they produced. This is a book for teachers and students, artists and art lovers, as well as academic art historians.
