Aucune introduction ne peut etre mieux appropriee a ce roman que quelques details sur le personnage singulier dont le nom lui sert de titre et qui, a travers la bonne et la mauvaise renommee, a conserve une importance remarquable dans les souvenirs populaires. Cette importance ne peut etre attribuee a la distinction de sa naissance qui, bien que celle d'un gentilhomme, n'avait aucune illustration et lui donnait peu de droits a commander dans son clan; non plus que, malgre une vie agitee et remplie d'evenements, ses hauts faits n'egalent ceux des autres pillards ou bandits qui ont acquis moins de renommee. Sa gloire vint en grande partie de ce qu'il habitait sur les limites des Hautes-Terres et qu'il joua au commencement du dix-huitieme siecle les memes tours que ceux qu'on attribue generalement a Robin-Hood dans le Moyen Age et cela a quarante milles de Glascow, grande ville de commerce et siege d'une savante universite. Un homme qui reunissait les vertus sauvages, la politique la plus subtile et la licence sans bornes d'un Indien d'Amerique vivait en Ecosse dans le siecle auguste de la reine Anne et de George Ier. Il est probable qu'Addison ou Pope n'auraient pas ete peu etonnes s'ils eussent appris qu'il existait, dans la meme ile qu'ils habitaient, un personnage de la profession de Rob-Roy. C'est ce contraste frappant de la civilisation d'un cote des montagnes et des entreprises aventureuses et contraires aux lois qui etaient accomplies par un homme vivant du cote oppose de cette ligne imaginaire qui crea l'interet attache a son nom; et meme encore aujourd'hui: Pres et loin, a travers les vallons et les montagnes sont des etres qui en attestent la verite et s'animent comme le feu qu'on remue au seul nom de Rob-Roy. (Wordsworth.) Rob-Roy possedait plusieurs avantages pour soutenir avec succes le role qu'il voulait jouer. Le plus grand etait son intimite avec le clan Mac-Gregor dont il descendait: clan si fameux par ses infortunes et par l'indomptable energie avec laquelle il se maintint uni en corps, malgre les lois qui poursuivaient avec la plus severe rigueur ce nom proscrit. L'histoire de ce clan etait celle de plusieurs autres dans les Hautes-Terres qui furent ecrases par des voisins plus puissants et forces pour leur propre surete de renoncer a leur nom de famille et de prendre celui de leur vainqueur. Ce qu'il y a de plus particulier dans celle des Mac- Gregors, c'est leur obstination a conserver leur existence separee et leur union comme clan, dans les circonstances les plus difficiles.
