Publisher's Synopsis

British streets are very hostile places. Increasing reliance on cars, even for short journeys, has squeezed out other road users. Not only have streets long ceased to be places where children can play, but in many places traffic has made them unsuitable even for walking. Dangerous, unhealthy and environmentally damaging, roads have become a serious threat to the quality of life.;This text argues that we need a new vision for our roads, once again seeing them as important social spaces and not simply conduits for cars. To this end the report makes a number of far-reaching proposals, including the introduction of a default 20 mph speed limit on all urban roads and the phasing in of compulsory speed limiters for all new cars.
