After stumbling upon a mysterious scroll which appears to have been tampered with, Demi, a fourteen-year-old "dreamer" is convinced that a conspiracy to keep a vault of timeless wealth hidden from the public is being perpetrated by the city's most powerful politicians. Seeking to uncover the plot against the citizens of the city he sets out to find the truth. Things soon spiral out of control when word of a real life "treasure hunt" begins to circulate among his friends, leading to a night of drunken mischief and a horrific discovery. Demi's investigation takes him from "law abiding" citizen to "common criminal," from the inner walls of Rhodes' famed education system to the southern wilds where a midnight romp into the forbidden Yard of the Damned seals his fate forever. Demi and his motley band of treasure hunters soon learn that the truth is better left locked away as they find themselves facing off against savage forces bent on their utter destruction. Against his will Demi is cast down into a world of darkness and brutality, a place where only the strongest and most cunning predators survive. His arrival on this plane of dread and malice unwittingly pits him against the true masters of the night. Driven from all that he knows and loves he has but one hope for survival: a Blood Drinker-an outcast who all others despise.
