Chose etrange, Charles - Albert se trouvait sur ce Tessin ou on l'avait vu, en 1821, verser des larmes ameres en s'enfuyant vers Milan, et Ou sa fortune devait le ramener encore aux prises avec de bien autres revers. En ce moment, le 29 mars, jour Ou il entrait a Pavie avec son armee, tout semblait sourire a son entreprise. Il avait pour lui la faveur des circonstances, l'exaltation de tout un peuple, des troupes devouees et fieres de combattre, et il n'avait devant lui que des legions humiliees par une defaite, coupees dans toutes leurs communications. L'armee sarde ne s'elevait pas alors au chiffre de soixante-dix mille hommes, six mille chevaux et cent vingt pieces d'artillerie, qu'elle a atteint par la suite; elle comp tait a peine vingt - cinq mille hommes a son entree en Lombardie. Peu apres elle etait assez augmentee pour former six divisions, re parties eu deux corps places sous les ordres des generaux Bava et de Sonnaz. Le duc de Savoie commandait une division de reserve, le duc de Genes l'artillerie. C'est avec ces forces que commencait, aux premiers jours d'avril 18118, entre ces lignes de defense du Tessin, du Mincio et de l'adige, qui coupent l'italie du nord, une campagne de quatre mois pleine d'incidens et de peripeties, compliquee de tous ces elemens qui surgissent dans l'ebullition d'un peuple enthou siaste et mobile.
