On sait que les Fran�ais, apr�s avoir fond� leur principal �tablissement 'a Surate, s'empar�rent le 25 juillet 1672 de Saint - Thom�, ou plut�t M�liapour, sur la c�te de Coro mandel. Les Hollandais vinrent les y assi�ger deux ans plus tard, et la place capitula le 6 septembre 1674. Quel ques-uns des vaincus se r�fugi�rent, par mer, dans un petit village a une vingtaine de 'ienes au sud, qui s'ap pelait Padatch�ri nouveau hameau et o�, depuis le 15 janvier, �tait �tabli Fran�ois Martin, ancien gouverneur de Mazulipatam (l).
