Publisher's Synopsis

Retrospect: An Unfinished Autobiography 1848-1886 is a memoir written by Arthur James Balfour, the First Earl of Balfour, a prominent British politician and statesman. The book covers the period from Balfour's birth in 1848 to 1886, when he was serving as a Member of Parliament. Balfour was a member of the Conservative Party and served as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom from 1902 to 1905. In Retrospect, he provides a personal account of his life and career, including his education at Eton and Cambridge, his early political experiences, and his time as Chief Secretary for Ireland. The book also covers Balfour's personal life, including his relationships with his family and friends, as well as his interests outside of politics, such as his love of music and poetry. Retrospect was originally intended to be a complete autobiography, but Balfour never finished it. The book was published posthumously in 1930, with an introduction by Balfour's nephew, the philosopher Bertrand Russell. Overall, Retrospect provides a unique insight into the life and times of one of Britain's most influential politicians of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This scarce antiquarian book is a facsimile reprint of the old original and may contain some imperfections such as library marks and notations.
