Parece que el opúsculo fué escrito en 1787, pues por este año fué cuando principiaron a me undear la vijilancia i persecuciones contra Espe jo, terminando por su destierro á Santafé, á pesar de que entonces era casi imposible que pen sase en la emancipacion de su patria. Mui pron to se intimó en Santafé con los literatos de ma yor nombradía i con los patriotas mas distingui dos, quienes, por 1790, tenian calados ya los mas de los sucesos de la revolucion francesa. Sus conexiones se estrecharon mui especialmente con don Antonio Nariño, republicano fogoso que como Espejo, no podia avenirse con el gobierno de los reyes.
