Publisher's Synopsis

The goldfields hold adventure and freedom most can only dream about. Set in the 1990s Frank and Brian Champion are middle aged brothers living a self-reliant life gold prospecting and mining in regional Victoria. Living onsite in a small hut the brothers live a happy and secluded life until trouble comes from the outside world, forcing them from their home.

As the last survivors in their mining family they discover they have inherited a house in Ballarat, with debt they can't pay off. Surrounded by eccentric neighbours who know their every thought and move the despair grows. Made worse when they're forced onto welfare and assigned help from the same family who forced them from their mine and home to begin with.

But gold miners are dreamers and opportunists. When they stumble onto some ancient mine plans and diaries they can't resist the chance and they embark upon a journey that will either kill or free them. What have they got to lose?

Written by a gold prospector who knows the highs and lows of city and bush. The story of the brothers is about struggling in a rapidly changing world that uses enforced submission and created insecurity as a means of control, often unrealised by its victims. To quote a line from The Truman Show: "We accept the reality of the world with which we're presented. It's as simple as that". The brothers look beyond the presented reality to restore their own.
