Publisher's Synopsis
Much environmental concern has been expressed over wastewater sludge, as rapid industrial developments together with increasing requirements for wastewater water treatment have exacerbated the scale of the sludge disposal problem worldwide. Probably the most significant recent approach to tackling this challenge rests on a change of perception: sludge should be seen not so much as a nuisance, but rather as a valuable resource to be exploited. The latest conference organised by IWA's Sludge Management Specialist Group provided a forum for some of the world's leading experts on sludge management to share new thinking on technologies and strategies for solving the sludge management problem in a framework of beneficial reuse. The 32 papers selected after peer review for these proceedings cover a wide range of innovative treatment technologies for sludge treatment, sludge minimisation and characterisation, beneficial reuse, and the development of new strategies for sludge management. They constitute an essential and timely reference for researchers, engineers, consultants and practitioners interested in sludge management.
