For drinking purposes it was formerly supposed that while the lime and magnesia compounds enumerated as occurring in the Hudson river water, and which are found in almost all river, pond and well waters, are not absolutely injurious in moderate quantities, it was nevertheless desirable that water for domestic use should be as free from them as possible; and the choice between two or more sources of water was decided by the relative am punts Of these substances present.
