Publisher's Synopsis

This book describes and compares the system of remuneration of general practitioners and gives an estimate of their income position in eleven Western European countries. The book starts with a chapter that reviews existing payment systems with other relevant features of the health care systems studied, relating them to the estimated income position of GPs. The most important feature related to their income is the density of GPs: the more GPs there are in a country, the lower their estimated average income. After this, eleven short chapters follow, each describing the situation in a country. The information for this study has been collected through reviews of the literature, informants in the different countries and official documents, such as fee schedules and contracts. For all countries the same reference year ? 1985 ? was used.
