Publisher's Synopsis
This work contains a collection of papers presented at the seventeenth symposium of the Institute for Theological Research (Unisa) at the University of South Africa in Pretoria in September 1993. In South Africa we live in a religiously diverse society but although numerous religions coexist in South Africa, these groups seem to know very little of the customs, beliefs and rituals of one another. Contributors to this volume are of the Jewish, Islamic, Hindu and Christian faiths and also of the African traditional religions. Our present constitution fully guarantees freedom of religion and this collection of papers was published before it was formulated. The central message of this book is a plea for religious tolerance and discovering our common humanity, which must not be mistaken for a syncretistic approach.
