Das Schlusswort dieser Vorrede gehort dem Danke an die drei Manner, die meine Lehrer gewesen sind und auf deren Einfluss auch die Entstehung dieses Buches zuruckgeht: august reifferscheid heinrich brunn, Tuuonoa Monmsmv. Der erstgenannte wurde, das weiss ich sehr wohl, an dem Buche keine ungeteilte Freude haben, denn je tiefer ich in den Gegenstand eingedrungen bin, um so weiter haben meine Wege sich von denen reifferscheids entfernt oder doch von mancher seiner Lieblingsideen abgefuhrt: meine Dank barkeit gegen ihn aber ist darum gewiss keine geringere, denn er hat mir zuerst dieses Arbeitsgebiet erschlossen und mir eine Fulle von Anregungen geboten, die, wenn sie auch mehr in der Frage stellung als in der Losung sich bewahrten, doch nie unfruchtbar waren. Heinrich brunn, ein Mann, auf den das Wort er 066' ac'vsi'r ro?0't anno? Eigens gepragt scheint, ist mir nicht nur allewegc in Leben und Wissenschaft ein vaterlicher Freund und Berater ge wesen, sondern hat mir auch sowohl durch seine Schriften als noch viel mehr in unvergesslichen Gesprachen den Blick gescharft gerade fur die Unterscheidung griechischen und romischen Wesens in Re ligion und Kunst. Beide Manner sind langst dahingegangen; nur der dritte weilt noch unter uns, durch unvergangliche Lebens und Schaffenskraft uns Jungeren wie der letzte Spross eines starkeren und glucklicheren Geschlechtes erscheinend, zu dem wir in Bewunderung emporsehen. Wenn ich heute dieses Buch, das durch mehr als ein Dutzend Jahre in guten und bosen Tagen mein Gefahrte und noch zuletzt in schwerem Ungluck mein Trost gewesen ist, in die Hande theodor mommsens lege, so gebe ich damit nur einen kleinen Teil dessen zuruck, was ich von ihm empfangen habe: dass ohne mommsens Lebenswerk, vor allem ohne das Staatsrecht und den Commenter zum Festka1ender, kein Kapitel dieses Buches hatte geschrieben werden konnen, wird jeder Sachkundige leicht sehen.
