Publisher's Synopsis

This book proposes to relate religion, education and economics in Max Weber. In this sense, the reflection is situated at the same time in the field of the sociology of religions, sociology of education and economic sociology. It is very common to speak of a sociology of religions and an economic sociology developed by this author. The same cannot be said of a sociology of education, perhaps for two reasons: first, Weber did not write any specific work on education, as was the case of Émile Durkheim; second, because the text Confucianism and Taoism, in which Weber outlines a typology of education, has long been disconnected from his intellectual and scientific project. In this text, Weber relates the types of education to the types of legitimate domination (rational-legal, traditional, charismatic), whether political or religious, without deducting the former from the latter. The purpose of the text is to demonstrate, in Weber's theory, how a religion acquires a position of orientation of life conduct of the socially dominant layers before becoming a factor of improvement of a society. And as in a traditional culture, such as China, the determinants of its life conduct, its lifestyle, are imposed beyond its own circle, until impregnating the whole society
