Publisher's Synopsis

Technical advances in radiological and endoscopic imaging have transformed medicine over the last seven decades. Because of its remarkable accessibility, the digestive tract has benefited fully from the endoscopic approach. There is an upper digestive tract and a lower digestive tract. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy is the gold standard for diagnosing the upper gastrointestinal tract above the TREITZ angle. It is a method of visual exploration of the upper digestive tract through an optical tube fitted with a lighting system called an endoscope or fiberscope. This examination enables direct exploration of the mucosa of the esophagus, stomach and duodenum, in order to detect abnormalities and take samples. It is both diagnostic and therapeutic. It is performed through the natural tract, or through an incision that allows it to penetrate certain body cavities. Depending on the technique used, the procedure is performed under local or general anesthesia.
