An endeavor has been made to gather in this volume in con venient form for reference, a record of the actions, campaigns and other movements in the civil war in which Wisconsin men took part, and to include the efforts of the people of the state, through the legislature and the courts and other organized agen cies, to uphold and support the forces of the Union in the man ner prescribed by the law and the constitution. The first section of the book embraces a list of the actions and campaigns in which Wisconsin troops were actually and ao tively engaged in contact with the enemy, giving date and ref erence to the organizations engaged; and reports, if any, made by the commanders of the regiments or batteries which furnish an account of the actions in question. -notes are added, giving references to Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies which contain all the official reports printed and avail able.
