Having become a resident of St. Lawrence county in this State in 1841 it was as a member of the Board of Supervisors of that county and as clerk of the same body, that he first rendered public service from 1854 to 1859. In the latter year he was elected a member of the Legislature and was re-elected to that notable body which, convening on January I, 1861, by its patriotic endeavor and wise legislation placed New York foremost of the oal states in the tribute of men and money to save the Union.
