Publisher's Synopsis

Excerpt from Recent Developments in Burma: Hearing Before the Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, Committee on International Relations, House of Representatives, One Hundred Fourth Congress, First Session, September 7, 1995

My statement today will be very brief. I am not an expert on Burma, and I am anxious to learn from our witnesses about what is happening in that country. While I shared the relief and pleas ure of the international community when I learned of Aung San Suu Kyi's release, the release also raises a number of important questions. Was her release merely part of the military junta's pub lic relations campaign to improve its image and attract foreign in vestment, or does it represent a serious step toward reconciliation between the military and democratic forces in Burma? How free is she to resume her previous political activities? Finally, how should the United States respond to this development?
