This fourth (and final) book in the series follows our hero John Burwell into the Confederate Navy as a gunnery officer. The North still holds parts of Louisiana protected by Federal gunboats and other warships, and two fortified lines outside New Orleans. John ends up in command of the gunboat Tennessee and survives two major fights on the river. Meanwhile, his wife Lucy gets pregnant in delivers twins. John is released by the Navy back into the Army and is retired as a Major to enjoy, finally, life as a farmer and teacher in a school for freed slaves and their children in Green Valley (now Buena Vista, Virginia).
