When a grave is uncovered on the Fens, DI Sydney Household, with the help of forensic pathologist Veronica Sleaford, identifies the body as that of Edward De Beer, a Cambridge student who went missing in the early 1970s. The lamppost on Parker's Piece, 'Reality Checkpoint', is the traditional marker between 'town' and 'gown, but De Beer seemed to have been caught between the two worlds. With the CID occupied in trying to catch the'Cambridge Panther', who is terrorising young women and holding them hostage, is there any chance of discovering what happened to De Beer thirty years ago?
