This work focuses on how to analyse and read psychiatric case notes. It uses an historical example to explore wider issues of how to approach the data and narratives contained in case notes. The data source is the cases notes - including the admission questionnaire, clinical notes, petition, and death certificate - of Abraham Raphael, a married 55-year-old headmaster of a Jewish orphanage, admitted to Bethlem Royal Hospital in 1910.
