Publisher's Synopsis

It was not until the early years of this century that it became evident that reactions take place in the solid state, as well as in liquid and gas phases. This realization stimulated the first studies of solid–state reactions in an attempt to understand the mechanisms of the processes and the factors determining the reactivity of solids.

A complete theory of the reactivity of solids has still to be formulated, but this book should offer important insights on the way to do this. A theory of the reactivity of solids would be of value not only to solid–state chemists but also to a much wider community. It is time that links were made between the commonly accepted concept of "classical molecular chemistry" and the ideas of solid–state chemistry.
