Publisher's Synopsis
Luke Barron, riding at night beyond Rattlesnake Mesa on his way to the Eagle Canon mining camp, sees an old woman in the box of a wagon cutting down a body hanging from a tree. A placard is attached to the body: Luke Barron, Beware! Luke soon finds himself in an encounter with Sheriff Sam Ingalls and the Avenging Angels until Father Matthew, religious founder of the Temple of the Redeemed in Eagle Canon, intercedes. Father Matthew is convinced that someone is using Luke's identity to stir up trouble in the camp and renaming him Luke Ashford, hires him as a private deputy to learn truth about the Luke Barron gang. He meets Nancy Steele, a nurse whose father is wanted by the Avenging Angels, they become allies in the effort to stop the claim jumpers, and dig up the truth.
