A breed of livestock guardian dog, the Sarplaninac is also known as the arplaninac or Yugoslavian Shepherd Dog. Its ancestral home is in the Sar Mountains of the Balkans, which are today located in what is Kosovo, North Macedonia, and Albania. In the native tongue, "Sar Planina" means "Shar Mountain," which is where "Sarplaninac" gets its origin.
- The guarding and protecting abilities of Sarplaninac dogs are legendary. Traditional herders in their native lands have relied on them to keep sheep and cattle safe from predators like wolves and bears. These canines are massive in size and strength, and they have a bold, headstrong personality to match. They have a well-deserved reputation for being fiercely devoted to their human families and protective of those they love.
- The thick double coat of the Sarplaninac dog is a necessary adaptation to the cold and snow of its alpine homeland. They stand out because to their large, round heads, muscular bodies, and long, bushy tails. White, gray, and brown are just some of the colors that might appear on their coat.
In addition to their protective character, Sarplaninac dogs are noted for being independent and strong-willed, making them good guardians for cattle and properties. Because of the time and effort required for training and socializing, they are not suggested as pets for inexperienced dog owners. When grown and socialized properly, however, they make wonderful pets.
