Rainey Royal lives in 1970s Greenwich Village with her jazz musician father. His personality and music combine to win him a cult following and he is surrounded by adoring fans. Rainey's mother left long ago and she is trying to avoid her father's creepy friend, whose actions are becoming more predatory. Despite all this, Rainey is trying hard to build and nurture a substitute family.
