1990: in Esther's hometown of Berkeley, smoky cafes are filled with people dressed in black. Intellectuals from the university, poets and occultists share tables. Jesus freaks, punks, hippies and self-styled vampires congregate on the street. Meanwhile Esther has traded in the loud hallways of public education for the tiny classrooms of a private high school. As she joins the ranks of the elite, she finds she must also trade in her childish spells for a more serious sort of magic.
