3. Recoil mechanism. - The one feature that impresses one as most unique and of greatest interest on this mount is the recoil mecha nism. For a mechanism of the period of 1888 it embodies some admirable and ingenious features. The details are seen best on Plates 1 and 2. There are three distinct subdivisions to the mechanism. These are, first, two hydraulic cylinders, Plate 2, embodied in the top or gun carriage, to check the recoil of the gun and its carriage as they slide to the rear. The second feature is the vertical hydraulic.
