Publisher's Synopsis

The use of safety analysis and risk assessment is widespread in the chemical industry and there are clear signs of an upsurge of interest in other industries. When safety analysis is more widely used, there is a danger of an increased variety of the quality of the analyses.;This book gives the basis for a systematic quality management of safety analysis and the main advantages and limitations of safety analysis are summarized. A framework is presented for quality management when planning, executing, and documenting safety analysis. This same framework can be used when evaluating the quality of the results.;A checklist-based method is presented in the appendix. The chapters of the book elaborate the ideas and questions behind the checklist. They evaluate the most important hazard identification and modelling methods, and describe the factors to be considered in their use. The applicability and results of consequence modelling and estimation are described in a similar manner. Guidance is given for determining the study objectives, defining the study boundaries, estimating the needs for resources, selecting the hazard identification and modelling methods, selecting reliability data, planning estimations, and finally for evaluating the results of a safety analysis.;The books is designed to serve as a reference for practising professionals, and as a textbook for graduate or professional courses. Factory inspectorates and managers of hazardous installations and trade unions, as well as local authorities, emergency services and insurance companies, may find it indispensable.
