Publisher's Synopsis

Synopsis
Sudden cardiac arrest is the cause of death in approximately one in every two thousand adults across the world but, uniquely amongst emergency medical conditions, death can be prevented by any rescuer (or bystander) with training in Basic Life Support or, if receiving instructions by telephone, someone without any training at all.

This text presents a self test, in a question and answer format, of the principles of Basic Life Support, aimed at both medical professionals, and the general public, including keen first-aiders. The aim of the test is to help anyone, who is trained in BLS (Basic Life Support), or has some familiarity with the format, to consolidate or extend their understanding of the steps to take when involved in a resuscitation incident, and to introduce some details which are specific to paediatric patients. To stimulate interest, there are also some questions which are more properly part of Advanced Life Support, including the issue of reversible causes of cardiac arrest.
