Publisher's Synopsis

One Hispanic woman's reflections on historical events and responses to contemporary issues (multi-culturalism, psychology, philosophy, history, sociology) for those in the helping profession. This a collection of thoughts & essays written originally as assignments while on the academic journey towards the destination of the Master's Degree of Psychology. It would be helpful to students of Human Services, as well as, interns, and those newly employed in the Helping Professional field. Topics discussed include multiculturalsim, Protestant values, the origins of the Hispanic culture, American slavery & racism, public education, career development, stress, the hazards of counseling, environmental psychology, working with groups, & tests & assessments. Author's note: The title came about during a conversation I had with one of my physicians. I mentioned that I was close to the completion of my Master's Degree in Psychology. Upon which my doctor stated, "well, the next time I see you, you'll be a mistress, but not a head mistress, just a mistress, as opposed to a master. The conversation played around the corners of my mind, & when I decided to try to put the collection into book form, the title "Pursuing the Mistress" seemed appropriate.
