Publisher's Synopsis
There are various accounts of the social division of labour between men and women. All of these separate the private world of the home and reproduction from the public world of 'work' and production. But this dichotomous way of thinking often does not mirror people's experiences. The private explains the public; science and knowledge-building are not activities that can be separated from people's personal experiences. Women's position has changed more in the public sphere than in the private, and the resistance of the private sphere to change which is notable today is linked with both the backlash against feminism and the conservative move towards 'pro-family' politics.
